Aspenfest in Ruidoso, New Mexico
October 4th and 5th, 2008
2007 Parade Winners
A patriotic theme headlined this year’s Aspenfest parade where
more than 25 floats , 80 entries and five bands from area schools dazzled
thousands of spectators on Saturday, October 6, 2007. This year’s theme, A Red,
White and Blue Ruidoso Valley brought ideas from several entrants with the top
three floats receiving prizes. Floats were judged based on adherence to the
theme, originality, workmanship and overall impression.
“This
year’s Aspenfest Parade was very special as it honored and celebrated our
patriotism,” said Rachel Weber, Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce Membership
and Special Projects Coordinator. “Our committee felt that the parade theme
reflects this as did our selection of this year’s Grand Marshalls, Hondo Valley
residents Novelda and Eddie Chavez, parents of fallen soldier Steven Chavez. It
was exhilarating to see so many floats embrace this theme with such enthusiasm
and creativity,” Weber added. Steven lost his life earlier this year in Anbar
Province, Iraq.
The
Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino float was a favorite among the crowd
and the judges as the first place float, winning a $100 cash prize. Mescalero
Headstart finished second place with a $75 cash prize and the Mescalero High
School Princess took third place with a $50 cash prize.
The
Aspenfest Parade is hosted and coordinated by the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of
Commerce office each year. Next year’s Aspenfest festivities will be the first
full weekend in October, October 4th & 5th 2008.
“This was a great celebration this year. There were thousands of visitors and
residents who enjoyed several activities that the Ruidoso area offered,” said
Brad Treptow, Executive Director for the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Treptow
said the weekend went very smooth. “I think the whole weekend was fun for
everyone and I would like to especially thank Ruidoso Village employees and
volunteers for the hard work they put into the preparations for Aspenfest
weekend. I think the fire, police, street and parks and recreation departments
did an outstanding job,” added Treptow.
